Shockers Start 2020 with Shocker Prelude

1/17/2020 7:32:00 PM

WICHITA—The Wichita State track and field teams kicked off 2020 with the Shocker Prelude in the Heskett Center on Friday.

The Shockers gathered nine event wins on the way to a second-place finish for the men and a fourth-place finish for the women.

Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Steve Rainbolt said he's excited to get back into the track and field season.

"(Getting back to competition is) really great," Rainbolt said. "I mean, this is what we work for all fall. And I know our athletes are really excited to kick off the year and get going in another track season.

"We feel like we've got a really nice team on both the men and the women so it makes it a lot of fun anticipating a big season."

Antonio Norman and Joseph Holthusen impressed in the 60-meter hurdles. The pair ran the fastest times in the prelims, and finished 1-2 in the final with Holthusen barely beating out his teammate.

Holthusen took the win with a time of 8.00, but Norman was right behind him at 8.03. Both athletes ran a personal best on their way to the 1-2 finish.

Rainbolt said he was impressed with the duo's race.

"I was really happy," Rainbolt said. "Personal records for both guys in the season opener. I just feel like those guys are going to benefit so much from having each other to push one another, so I thought it was fabulous."

Mel Obadiah, Morris Wynn and Cliff Littleton all debuted in the Shocker uniform today, and that trio took first, second and third in the 800 meters.

Cory Martens set a new personal best in the shot put with a throw that went 18.22m/59-9.50. Martens is on the Shocker roster, but used all four years of his eligibility indoors. He will be back with the Shockers for the outdoor season.

On the women's side, Danielle Rinn, Sharon Kiprop and Hope Saunders swept the top three spots in the Mile.

Amanda Kakoulias kicked off her season with a win as well, taking the shot put title with a mark of 13.75m/45-1.25.

The Shockers are back in action at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular. It's the sixth annual installment of the event and will be the second time the Shockers host all three of Kansas' Division I schools.
