Women's Track and Field Squad Wins Air Force Team Challenge

2/7/2020 10:36:00 PM

WICHITA—The Wichita State track and field teams had strong showings at the Air Force Team Challenge and Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational to kick off the weekend on Friday.

Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Steve Rainbolt said he was proud of both the men's and women's teams today.

"The women had many very good performances and I thought they competed hard and really looked dominant against three good teams," Rainbolt said. "Our men battled hard against a very good Air Force team and Air Force is always tough to beat at home and we almost got them."

The women's squad won the team competition at the Air Force Team Challenge in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Jacque Darby nearly jumped six meters, in the long jump. Her jump of 5.91m/19-4.75 won the contest and set a new personal-best mark. Darby moves to No. 9 all-time on WSU's indoor performance list.

Darby's victory led a host of Shockers in the long jump. Wichita State women took nine of the top 10 spots in the event.

Alex Adams also had a big personal best in the weight throw. She tossed the weight 18.60m/61-0.25. Her performance won the event and improved her No. 3 mark in school history.

Adams and teammate Amanda Kakoulias swept the top two spots in the shot put. Adams threw the shot 13.47m/44-2.50 for second place and Kakoulias tossed the shot 14.32m/46-11.75 for the win.

On the men's side, Michael Bryan threw a personal best in the weight throw with a mark of 18.67m/61-3. He moved up to No. 8 on the WSU indoor all-time performance list.

Adam Gauzy ran a time of 48.10 to win the men's 400 meters. Before conversion for altitude, Gauzy's time would sit at fifth in school history.

Rainbolt said he thought the team was very balanced.

"I feel like this was a nice step in our season momentum toward the American Athletic Conference Championship in three weeks," Rainbolt said.

In Lincoln, Nebraska, at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, The Shockers took the top two spots in the men's 5,000 meters. Clayton Duchatschek won the race with a time of 14:51.86 and Ethan Kossover was the runner-up in 14:54.63.

The Shockers return to action for the second day of the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational at 11:30 a.m. on Satuday.
