WICHITA - The Wichita State softball team (31-26, 15-8) extended its winning streak to six games and then saw it promptly snapped as the Shockers could not capitalize on four Evansville (30-17, 10-11) errors in game two, earning a doubleheader split with the Purple Aces on Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.

The Shockers scored late to secure a 6-1 win over Evansville in game one, but left 10 runners on base as the Aces turned three double plays to down WSU 3-1 in the second game of the day.

The Shockers got on the board first on a Evansville miscue, as Erin Peters reached on an infield single and later came around to score on an Ashley Hobbs wild pitch to give WSU a 1-0 lead. An error by Kristen Shirk on a Katie McGeeney steal attempt allowed Kara L'Huillier to score giving the Shockers a 2-0 lead after two. L'Huillier reached earlier in the inning on a chopping single over the head of Lissa Fehlman at third base.

Evansville answered with a run in the third, after two walks and two hit batters by Shocker starter Margo Pruis (20-11) resulted in a Purple Aces run to cut the Shocker advantage to 2-1, without the aid of a hit.

Neither team could manage any more offense until the Shockers got a run in the bottom of the fifth off a Lisa Jones two-out RBI single up the middle. Brooke Usher reached on a one-out double down the left field line that just glanced off Purple Aces left-fielder Brittany Herald, and came around to score on Jones' 26th RBI of the season.

A hit batter and a single by Laura Rather led to a pitching change for the Shockers, as Pruis turned the ball over to Ashly Bright. Bright issued a walk to Cassey Kemna to load the bases but caught Kristen Shirk looking to end the inning and the threat. Pruis finished the first game having thrown 5.1 innings, giving up just two hits and striking out five while walking two and hitting three.

The Shockers put the game away with a three-run sixth as Stephanie De La Riva led the inning off with a double to right and Lindsie Mitts reached on a fielder's choice to give the Shockers runners on first and second with one out. Katie McGeeney then ripped a single up the middle to bring home De La Riva and a Brooke Usher double to left-center brought home both McGeeney and Mitts to give the Shockers a 6-1 lead.

Bright shut the Aces down, working the final 1.2 innings without giving up a hit to pick up her second save of the season. Bright walked one and struck out three. It maked the 10th straight win for Pruis, as she won her 20th game for a third-straight season, the first Shocker to ever accomplish the feat.

Hobbs (10-7) took the loss for UE, giving up six runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out three.

The Shockers scored the first run of game two in the bottom of the third, as Kara L'Huillier scored an unearned run on a Cynthia Verhulst infield single to give WSU a 1-0 lead. The rally was aided by several Evansville defensive miscues, resulting in plating the unearned run.

Again the Aces answered, with a run in the top of the fourth on a RBI single by Ashley Werner that brought home Herald, tying the game at 1-1.

Evansville took its first lead of the day in the sixth, when Rather doubled off the right-center wall, bringing home Weslie Gladfelter, who was running for Liz Mooney, putting the Aces up 2-1. One batter later Evansville got an unearned run when a ball skipped through the legs of second baseman Brooke Usher, allowing Rather to score and give the Aces a 3-1 lead.

The Purple Aces last double play of the day was the most costly, as Lindsie Mitts was doubled off first after Jones lined out to the right fielder to end the game, giving Evansville the victory and snapping the Shockers' win streak.

Bright (7-10) took the hard luck loss for WSU, giving up three runs on six hits, with the third run unearned. Bright walked none and struck out eight in the losing effort. Jacki Bradley (9-5) managed to pick up the win for the Purple Aces, giving up just one run on 11 hits, while walking none and striking out one on the day.

The teams complete the series with a single game at noon on Sunday. Six Wichita State seniors will be honored prior to the game on Senior Day.
