CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Kinzey Woody homered twice and Wichita State hit four as a team to clinch the series with a 9-3 win at Charlotte Saturday afternoon.
Wichita State (26-15, 14-6) has now won a season-high seven straight games. The Shockers have outscored the Niners 19-6 over the first two games with five home runs.
Woody led the offensive attack, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs.
Jodie Epperson has five hits over the first two games after going 3-for-4.
Aeryn Shuman singled twice to extend her hit streak to four in a row.
Ausha Moore homered and scored twice and
Kammie Smith ran her hit streak to 10 straight.
Mickayla Tosch recorded her first hit since February 28 with an RBI double.
Johnna Schroeder hit her fourth home run of the season, going 1-for-4.
Ava Sliger (7-1) earned the win in the circle. She allowed two runs on seven hits, one walk and two strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
Jade Sanders struck out six over 3.0 innings of relief, allowing just one run on one hit.
For the second straight game Wichita State hung a crooked number on the scoreboard in the top of the first. A pair of two-run home runs from Woody and Schroeder put the Shockers in front, 4-0.
Charlotte got a run back in the bottom of the first on a sac fly. Sliger got out of the inning without any further damage on a 2-4-2 caught stealing at home when the Niners attempted a double steal.
Moore homered for the second straight day on the first pitch she saw in the top of the second to make it 5-1.
The Niners cut into the lead in the fourth on an RBI ground out.
In the top of the fifth, Woody left the yard for the second time of the game, this time a solo shot to dead center, pushing the margin back to four. That four-run margin would not last long, as Charlotte answered with a solo homer of its own.
Wichita State broke it open in the top of the sixth with three runs to take a 9-3 lead. Tosch started the scoring with an RBI double down the right field line, and then back-to-back bases loaded walks from Woody and Smith capped the frame.
