Big First Inning Lifts Shockers to 10-3 Win at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Wichita State scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 10-3 win in the series opener at Charlotte Friday night.

Wichita State (25-15, 13-6) extended its win streak to six in a row with the win and moved into a tie for second place with North Texas after the Mean Green lost to Memphis Friday.

Wichita State racked up 10 hits, but did most of its damage on free passes. The Shockers drew a school record 12 walks.

Ausha Moore homered, walked twice, scored twice and drove in three runs. Johnna Schroeder was 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs. Jodie Epperson doubled twice and scored twice. Aeryn Shuman recorded a hit in her third straight start with a double and two RBIs.

Ryley Nihart (11-9) tossed another complete game, allowing just one earned run on five hits.

The Shockers scored all six of their runs in the top of the first with two outs. Kammie Smith opened the scoring on a single and Charlotte error. Epperson laced an RBI double off the base of the wall in left to make it 2-0 and a two-run double from Shuman pushed the lead to 4-0. Back-to-back bases loaded walks from Trinity Allen and Moore capped the inning.

In the top of the third, Moore blasted her team-leading 14th home run of the season, pushing the lead to 8-0.

Charlotte broke up the shutout in the home half of the third on a pair of errors. Wichita State finished the night with a season-high four errors.

Gabby Scott got the run back plus one more in the top of the fourth on a pinch-hit, two-run single, making it 10-1.

The Niners scored their final two runs in the bottom of the fourth on an error and RBI single.
