Shockers Claim 10 Wins at Kansas, Parrish PRs at Georgia

Wichita State picked up 10 event wins Friday and Saturday at the Rock Chalk Classic in Lawrence, Kan., while the Parrish twins recorded quality marks at the Torrin Lawrence Memorial on Saturday in Athens, Ga.
 
Sophomore Chairo Ogbebor claimed the first win of the weekend, running a personal-best 21.25 in his first 200-meter dash of the outdoor season, and freshman Brody Anderson ran a personal-best 21.75 to finish third. Freshman Zada Brown won the women's 200 with a time of 24.28 to give the Shockers the sweep of the event.
 
Senior Sadie Millard followed that up with a season-best time in the 400-meter hurdles to win the event in 59.65, just 0.01 seconds off her personal best.
 
In the men's pole vault B section, sophomore Carson Ratzlaff and freshman Liam Miller went 1-2, both clearing 4.91m/16'1.25".
 
Senior Jelese Alexander won her second high jump competition of the outdoor season, leading the Shockers to the top-two high jump placements as both she and junior Mattelyn Swartz both cleared 1.68m/5'6". Alexander also placed sixth in the long jump with another big jump, recording a mark of 6.23m/20'5.25". Sophomore Darius Graham gave the Shockers the men's/women's high jump sweep, clearing a collegiate-best 2.09m/6'10.25" to win the event. Sophomore Kaleb Tesmer and freshman Andre Pentecost Jr. placed second and third, clearing 2.04m/6'8.25" and 1.99m/6'6.25", respectively.
 
Wichita State swept the steeplechase with freshman Austin Carrera breaking the nine-minute barrier for the first time, running the No. 9 time in school history, 8:54.42, to win the men's race and senior Amanda Treptow running 11:18.88 to win the women's race.
 
Jarrett Schmidt opened up day two of the Rock Chalk Classic with a discus win, throwing 50.67m/166'3", and Rikard Trogen Hedin took second with a personal-best throw of 50.61m/166'0".
 
In the first running event of day two, the Wichita State men's 4x100-meter relay squad of Tyler Carroll, Kelvin Acheampong, Anderson and Ogbebor won the race with a time of 40.81.
 
Carroll went on to finish second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.99, and Jabari Armstrong took third with the No. 9 time in school history and a personal-best 14.02.
 
In the 1500 meters, Kelvin Kipyego improved his No. 2 time in school history to 3:42.24 to finish third in the men's race, and Vivien Kipkorir and Lucy Ndungu went 2-3 in the women's race with times of 4:33.55 and 4:33.61, respectively.
 
Karlynn Hornung also added her name to Wichita State's all-time top-10 list with a personal-best throw of 51.72m/169'8" in the hammer to place third.

In the women's triple jump, Kennady Washington and Sonya Haylor recorded personal bests to place sixth and seventh, respectively. Washington jumped 12.56m/41'2.5", and Haylor jumped 12.44m/40'9.75".
 
Over at the Torrin Lawrence Memorial hosted by Georgia, Josh Parrish ran a personal best of 13.46 to finish second in the 110-meter hurdles and move up No. 14 in the NCAA and No. 1 in the American Conference. He also placed third in the long jump with a mark of 7.48m/24'6.5", and Jason Parrish ran 50.43 to finish third in the 400-meter hurdles.
 
The Shockers return home for their final regular season meet on Friday, May 8. Wichita State will host its first meet on its brand new track and honor its seniors at the Shocker Open.
