TOPEKA—The Wichita State track and field teams made the short trip up I-35 to compete in the Division I Challenge hosted by Washburn.
The Shockers took home top-three team finishes on each side. The Wichita State men took second with 115 points and the Shocker women took third with 84.5 points.
Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Steve Rainbolt said he felt like his team would learn some good lessons from this track meet.
"We had some very good performances including quite a few personal records, but we also had some learning experiences that I know athletes on our team will grow from," Rainbolt said. "The Championship at the Peak two weeks from now will be a nice finish for most of our team to this indoor season and I think today can help us prepare for that if we learn lessons from this experience."
Jed Helker earned the only individual event win for the Shocker men, winning the men's Mile with a time of 4:06.03. His time puts him at No. 6 in school history in the event.
Michael Bryan had another solid performance in the weight throw. He tossed the weight 19.17m/62-10.75 for fifth place.
In the 60-meter hurdles,
Joseph Holthusen and
Antonio Norman took spots two and three. Holthusen ran a time of 7.90 and Norman ran a time of 8.00.
Weston Lewis led a strong group of high jumpers. He was the event's runner-up, clearing 2.00m/6-6.75.
On the women's side,
Winny Koskei continued her momentum from last week's AAC XC Championships where she won the conference individual title.
Koskei won the women's 5,000 meters with a time of 16:32.95.
Paula Garcia was the runner-up in the women's 200 meters with a time of 24.57.
Taniyah McMillian added to the women's sprints group's success, running the 400 meters in 56.90, earning a third-place finish.
Yazmine Wright broke the 5-minute mark in the women's Mile, finishing third with a time of 4:57.00.
The Shockers are off next week, but return on Feb. 25 for a three-day championship-style meet with the Championship at the Peak in Colorado Springs, Colorado, hosted by Air Force.
