WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State's first 14 student-athletes competed Thursday at the West Preliminary Championships competition of the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 25-27.
The Shockers overall qualified 25 track and field student-athletes for the competition.
Austin Corley advanced to the Friday quarterfinals in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 51.69.
Isaac Poe was 41st with a 53.81.
Hunter Veith was 27th in the long jump with a distance of 24-7/7.49m.
For the women,
Nikki Larch-Miller ran a 11.61 in the 100 meters,
Sidney Hirsch ran the 10k in 36:14.09 and
Claudia Rojo ran the 400 hurdles in a time of 1:00.37 but did not advance.
Jamesia Milton was 34th in the hammer throw with a toss of 185-11/56.67m, while
Alesa Frey no-heighted in the pole vault.
Carlea Holt-Miles finished 27th in the javelin (145-9/44.43m) and
Breanne Borman was 43rd with a throw of 133-1/40.56m.
For the men,
Michael Wells ran a personal best of 10.32 in the 100 meters to finish 29th, while
Ugis Jocis ran a 3:56.98 to finish 25th. In the javelin,
Aaron True was 15th with a throw of 215-7/65.70m and
John Hoplin was 22nd with a throw of 207-6/63.25m.
Earlier this week, four Shocker multi-athletes (
Hunter Veith,
Breanne Borman,
Gavyn Yetter,
Nikki Larch-Miller) were announced earlier this week as qualifying for the NCAA Championship. Those four, in addition to the qualifiers out of the East and West Preliminary Championships, will compete at the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 7-10 in Eugene, Oregon.
Wichita set 42 personal bests in winning both the Men's and Women's Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Wichita. In addition, the Shockers also set or improved 15 Top 10 All-Time WSU marks, including school records by
Jamesia Milton in the hammer throw (205-8/62.69) and
Tyra Bickham in the discus (48-6.25/14.79m).
Austin Corley had the highest ranking of WSU's preliminary qualifiers with the No. 9 time of 50.59 in the West 400 meter hurdles heading into the West Prelims.
Action begins tomorrow at the West Prelims with six Shockers competing.
