Dalmacio, Hanisch Earn Prestigious ITA Awards

WICHITA - Shocker seniors Stephanie Dalmacio and Florentina Hanisch were highly honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday, claiming the Senior Player of the Year and the Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship in the central region.

Playing at the No. 2 singles position for most of the season, Dalmacio was named the ITA Central Region Senior of the Year after accruing a 25-10 singles record this season, making her the fifth-winningest Shocker of all time with an 92-45 career record.

Dalmacio led in both the quarterfinal and semifinal matches before they were called during the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference tournament. The Brasilia, Brazil natives ran through the championship match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Franziska Steinhardt of Illinois State to help guide her team to victory. Her leadership helped push the Shocks to their fourth MVC title in five years, and Dalmacio's third NCAA Tournament appearance of her career.

Aside from posting an impressive 30-1 Missouri Valley dual record with Hanisch and the class of 2010, Dalmacio won the MVC Individual Tournament in the No. 1 Singles Flight this fall.

In doubles play, Dalmacio really shined as her 100-44 career doubles record put her third on the list of the Shockers' all-time doubles wins list. She and sophomore Delia Damaschin will look to add more to that list when the 40th-ranked duo in the country heads to the NCAA Individual Championships on May 26-31.

The ITA awarded fellow Brazilian senior Florentina Hanisch another of its coveted honors, the ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship.

Hanisch is just a solitary win outside of the Top 10 as her 81 career singles wins puts her at 11th on the all-time list. Known for her bright smile and upbeat positive energy, Hanisch easily fits the award's namesake.

The Florianopolis, Brazil native went 2-0 in singles and a perfect 3-0 with doubles partner and the third of the senior trio, Lenore Lazaroiu, to propel the Shockers to the State Farm MVC title. She was also leading in the No. 5 position against the #16 Longhorns at the NCAA Tournament when the match was called.

She, too, was an MVC Individual Tournament singles champion this fall and posted a flawless 7-0 singles conference mark this spring.

In doubles play, Hanisch won her way to an astonishing 91-42 career record for the sixth-best win total in program history. She and Lazaroiu went 20-8 together this season with a flawless 7-0 MVC record.

The Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship goes to a women's player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis.
