TULSA, Okla. – Wichita State's
Xin Tong Wang and
Giorgia Roselli won the 2025 American Conference Doubles Championship Sunday afternoon at Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Â
The top-seeded and 31st-ranked Shockers dispatched Charlotte's third-seeded Ni Xi and Sara Suchankova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to win the doubles title. With the win, the Shockers have earned the right to represent the American Conference in doubles at the 2025 ITA Conference Masters Championship, Nov. 7-9, at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
Â
The Shockers came out strong in the first set, taking the first two games, including an early break of Charlotte's serve. The break was all the Shockers needed, as the teams traded wins on serve the rest of the set, with the Shockers winning 6-4.
Â
In the second set, the Shockers broke Charlotte early on again to take a 2-1 lead. The 49ers were poised to break Wichita State right back, taking a 40-15 lead in the next game, but Roselli and Wang won three consecutive points to steal the game and take a 3-1 advantage. The game would prove pivotal in the Shockers' win.Â
Â
With Wang serving up 5-4, Charlotte held a 40-30 lead, but the Shockers won the next point to draw level. On deuce point, Roselli perfectly poached the return of Suchankova, generating a chance at an overhead, which Roselli spiked down, bouncing it over the heads of the two Charlotte players to clinch the doubles title for the Shockers.Â
Â
The Shockers held in all 10 of their service games, including on match point. Two breaks of Charlotte were all it took for Wang and Roselli to win the title.Â
Â
In the singles title match, Roselli did not fare as well against Xi, as the Charlotte star won 11 of the first 12 games on her way to a 6-0, 6-4 win against Roselli. The Shocker finished the week with two trophies – a doubles championship and a singles finalist finish.
Â
Wang and Roselli will compete at the ITA Conference Masters Championship against other conference champions for a spot in the 2025 NCAA Doubles Championship.
