Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - A 20-0 run from Wichita State closed out the first half and regained the
Shockers' lead for good in a 71-52 win against UMKC Monday at Charles Koch
Arena.
Junior
guard David Kyles led the Shockers with 12 points and junior center Garrett
Stutz added 11 points in the non-conference men's basketball win in front of
10,154 fans.
Former
Shocker Reggie Chamberlain led UMKC (4-1) with a game-high 20 points as the
Kangaroos suffered their first loss of the season.
Wichita
State improved to 4-1 on the season as the Shockers won their third consecutive
game, playing their first game after the EA Sports Maui Invitational.
The
Shockers jumped out to a 6-3 lead that included four points from J.T. Durley in
the opening minutes, but UMKC responded with an 8-2 run. Chamberlain scored two
3-pointers during the run that gave the Kangaroos an 11-8 edge.
A
layup from Demetric Williams tied the game, 12-12, but the Roos answered with
an 8-0 run that included a four-point play from Chamberlain for a 20-12 UMKC
lead.
Later
in the half, the Shockers' offense exploded. A layup from Stutz, 3-pointer from
Kyles and layup from Graham Hatch regained Wichita State's lead, 24-23, with
less than six minutes remaining in the half.
The
Shockers continued to add to their lead, closing out the half on a 20-0 run that
kept UMKC scoreless for the final 8:13 of the half.
Stutz
led the Shockers with eight points in the first half. Durley added six points.
Toure' Murry and Gabe Blair each led the Shockers with four rebounds each.
Chamberlain
had 13 points in the first half for UMKC.
Early
in the second half, a bucket from Blair pushed the Shockers to a 45-24 lead.
UMKC's
first field goal in a span of more than 12 minutes -- a span that started in
the first half -- came with about 15:30 remaining in the second half, scored by
Spencer Johnson.
A
10-1 run by the Kangaroos later in the half cut the Shockers' lead to 11 points
midway through the second half. A 3-pointer from Chamberlain with about nine
minutes left on the clock cut Wichita State's lead back to single digits, 50-41.
But
a quick three-point play from Durley, followed by a 3-pointer from Kyles pushed
the Shockers to a 56-41 lead. Kyles entered the game leading Wichita State with
an average of 15.5 points per game.
A
3-pointer from Kyles gave Wichita State a 64-48 lead in the Shockers' second
home game of the young season.
Wichita
State outrebounded UMKC, 31-30, making the Kangaroos the fifth opponent this
season the Shockers have outrebounded.
Monday
kicked off a three-game week for the Shockers, who return to action at 7:05
p.m. Wednesday against Chicago State at Charles Koch Arena. Wichita State plays
at San Diego State Saturday.
