BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Destiny Masters earned her first indoor conference medal, and the men's distance medley relay placed third to highlight the first day of the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Masters placed second in the pentathlon with four top-five marks to earn a spot on the podium with a total of 3,958 points behind Tulane's Kristen O'Handley, who broke the meet record in the event with 4,175 points. The sophomore earned all-conference recognition for her performance.
After day one of the men's heptathlon,
Adria Navajon, the reigning indoor and outdoor multi-event conference champion, leads the field with 3,166 points, recording the top marks in three of four events.
Hudson Bailey (3
rd),
Nate Vann (4
th) and
Kolby Caster (6
th) are also in scoring position after day one, with Bailey throwing the best shot put mark of the day.
The Shocker men scored in four of five event finals, including an all-conference performance by the distance medley relay team of
Bryce Merriman,
RJ Hutchison,
Toby Penner and
Adrian Diaz-Lopez. The team ended up third in the race after what would have been a meet record-breaking relay by Tulsa was disqualified.
Creighton Camp scored the first points of the day for the Shockers with a personal best in the weight throw, finishing sixth (15.82m51'11'). Two Shockers scored in the 5,000 meters with
Clayton Duchatschek narrowly missing the podium with a fourth-place finish in 14:09.89 and
Trey Rios placing sixth in 14:11.85, the fourth-fastest time in school history. Navajon wrapped up the day with an eighth-place performance in the long jump, jumping 7.10m/23'3.5".
In addition to finishing the heptathlon on day two, Navajon joins
Joseph Holthusen and
Jaleel Montgomery in the 60-meter hurdles final as the trio clocked the fourth (Holthusen; 8.02), fifth (Navajon; 8.04) and eighth-fastest (Montgomery;8.17) prelim times
Joakim Genereux and
JD Prinsloo finished sixth in the 200-meter prelims and 400-meter prelims, respectively, and will race in the finals on Saturday.
Merriman will also race in a final tomorrow after recording the seventh-fastest 800-meter prelim time.
The women scored in three of six event finals, including
Zarrey Sams' seventh-place finish in the long jump with a personal best of 6.04m/19'9.75" and the eight-place finish by the distance medley relay, run by
Peyton Pogge,
Sydney Johnson,
Lea Jerkovic and
Abeba Sullivan.
Farrah Miller finished second in her prelim heat of the 800 meters with a career-best 2:10.02 to qualify for Saturday's final with the third-best overall time. Miller was the lone Shocker woman to make it out of the running event prelims on day one as the Shockers enter day two with 11 points (10
th/11).
The Shockers are back on the track Saturday at 9 a.m.
