SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Freshman
Mackenzie Wilson needed only one tournament to record her first career top five finish. The Australia native finished fourth in Wichita State's season-opening tournament, the Payne Stewart Memorial, which concluded Tuesday afternoon at Rivercut Golf Course.
As a team, Wichita State tied for sixth out of 15 teams behind rounds of 293, 304 and 302 and a total score of 899 (+35). Oklahoma City claimed the team title at 15-over par, 879.
Wilson finished just two strokes behind the individual medalist, carding a total score of 217 (+1). She turned in an opening round of 2-under par, 70 to begin her collegiate career. To round out her two-day total, Wilson recorded an even-par, 72 and a 3-over par, 75 in the second and third rounds.
Megan Lucas turned in her best round on the final day with an even-par, 72. Her 54-hole score of 226Â (+10) put her in a tie for 29th.Â
Sarah Lawson came in tied for 46th at 15-over par, 231 (73-83-75). Lawson's 54-hole score of 231 marked a career-best. Coming in one stroke behind was
Mar Vidal tying for 49th at 16-over par, 232Â (74-78-80).
Also making her collegiate debut was
Brooklyn Benn, who finished in a tie for 69th at 25-over par, 241.
Madison Slayton competed as an individual and tied for 64th at 22-over par, 238.
Wichita State will next travel to Columbia, Mo., for the Johnie Imes Invitational, Sept. 26-28.
