GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Senior All-American Dustin Garza won his fifth tournament of the year to propel the Shockers to the 2010 Desert Shootout tournament title on Saturday.
Tied with Kansas at the end of the third round (855), Wichita State won in a playoff on Saturday afternoon in Arizona.
"The playoff was worth a month of practice," head coach Grier Jones said. "You can't create that kind of pressure outside of going through it. Win or loss, it would've been valuable experience. We were fortunate to come out on the other side with the win. I give a lot of credit to Kansas, they had a great week."
Garza shot in the sixties in all three rounds to claim individual medalist honors by three strokes, highlighted by his first 65 (-6) of the spring. The Mission, Texas native was tied for fourth after round one and he climbed his way up from there. His 54-hole score of 202 (68-65-69) topped second-place Nate Barbee of Kansas, who shot a 205 (68-67-70) for the tournament.
The senior carried the load for the Shockers, freshman Rafael Becker finished the closest behind Garza. He shot one-over on the final day to finish the tournament tied for 28th.
Freshmen Tyler Gann and Hunter Sparks handed in matching scores for the third round in a row, the pair fired a 78 (+7) on the final day, finishing the tournament at 221. Sophomore Anders Engell notched the same score over 54 holes, and all three Shockers tied for 50th.
Playing as an individual, senior Brad Boan repeated his first-round score of 77 on day three and finished tied for 93rd overall.
"I'm proud of how we competed out here in Phoenix," Jones said. "The guys made a point of keeping their cool and staying positive out here and it made a huge difference."
