Hull Blasts Shocks to 6-2 win over No. 22 Texas

3/1/2008 1:00:00 AM

AUSTIN, Texas-Jamie Hull hit her first collegiate home run and collected four RBI as Wichita State (10-7) rebounded from a loss in the afternoon and beat No. 22 Texas (10-6-1) 6-2 Saturday night.

UT struck first in the bottom of the second. Brittney Barnhill led off the inning with a bloop-double that was just out of centerfielder Lindsie Mitts' reach. After a strikeout and groundout, MicKayla Padilla hit a double off the left field wall to score Barnhill and give the Longhorns a 1-0 lead.

Jamie Hull led off the top of the third by drawing a walk. With two outs, Katie McGeeney lined a double over leftfielder Shelby Savony's head. Hull scored from first to tie the score, 1-1. The Shockers showed off their defensive skills in the bottom of the inning when Kacie Gaskin hit a single to right. Gaskin headed for second but a strong throw from Kiersten Dixon started a rundown ending with Hull tagging Gaskin out.

Heather Gerritse kept the momentum going in the top of the fourth, reaching base on an infield single, followed by a walk from Jamie Stanclift. After being down in the count, Hull fouled several pitches off before working the count full. Hull then hit her first collegiate home run over the left field wall to give WSU a 4-1 lead.

The homer chased UT starter Meagan Denny from the game. The 3.1 innings pitched is her shortest outing of the season. New pitcher Torrey Schroeder walked Mitts on four straight pitches and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Dixon then lined a double to the gap in right-center to score Mitts and put the Shockers up 5-1.

UT picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out RBI double by Brittney Chalk. The Shockers responded in the top of the fifth. Britnee Barnett led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error by second baseman Crystal Saenz. Hull lined a single up the middle to score Barnett and pick up her fourth RBI of the game for a 6-2 lead.

The Longhorns threatened in the bottom of the fifth. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, Brianna Smet loaded the bases by sandwiching a single by Gaskin between two walks to load the bases. Ashly Bright came in and got Kelly Melone to strike out swinging to end the inning.

Texas never threatened again as Bright closed the door in the six and seventh.

Smet picked up the win by going 4.2 innings, allowing just two runs and striking out two. She moves to 3-0 on the season.

The Shockers will be back in action Sun., Mar. 2 at 11 a.m., as they take on Wisconsin, who defeated Utah, 4-2, on Saturday night.
