Shockers Sweep Doubleheader and Series vs. UTSA

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State swept the doubleheader and the series vs. UTSA with a 12-4 and 3-1 win Saturday at Wilkins Stadium.

Wichita State (24-15, 12-6) picked up its second conference series sweep of the season and extended its win streak to five in a row.

UTSA 4, Wichita State 12 (5 innings)

Wichita State scored 11 of its 12 runs via home runs, including the first career two-home run game for Kinzey Woody. Woody was 2-for-3 with two home runs and a career-high six RBIs. One of her homers was a grand slam, marking the second of her career.

Ausha Moore and Mackenzie Rooney added a home run apiece. Rooney was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Aeryn Shuman made the start at catcher and went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

Ava Sliger (6-1) earned the win, tossing all 5.0 innings. She allowed four runs on nine hits with no walks and one strikeout.

UTSA opened the scoring in the top of the first on a two-out RBI single. The Shockers answered with a five-run bottom of the second behind Rooney's three-run home run and Moore's two-run shot to take a 5-1 lead.

Woody then broke the game open in the bottom of the third on her grand slam, pushing the lead to 9-1. UTSA would briefly cut into the margin in the fourth on a pair of home runs, cutting the deficit to 9-4.

Shuman got a run back for Wichita State in the home half of the fourth on an RBI single and then Woody ended the game in the fifth on her walk-off, two-run home run, bringing the run-rule into effect.

Wichita State totaled 13 hits with all but one Shockers recording a hit in the starting lineup.

UTSA 1, Wichita State 3

Much like Friday's opener, the finale was a pitching duel. Wichita State managed just six hits, while UTSA had only three.

Shuman was the lone Shocker to record multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Moore added her second home run of the day and Woody drove in the third run on an RBI single.

Ryley Nihart (10-9) allowed only one run on three hits to earn the complete game victory.

Wichita State scored a run in the second and a run in the third on solo homers from Shuman and Moore.

UTSA cut the lead in half on a solo home run in the fourth, but would not score again. Woody's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth provided an insurance run.
