AUSTIN, Texas- Wichita State fell to 9-6 on the season after a 9-2 loss to No. 22 Texas, Friday night in the Shockers' second game of the Texas Classic.
The Longhorns struck first in the top of the third with a two-out rally. After Ashly Bright had struck out the first two batters, Crystal Saenz singled and stole second. Desiree Williams walked followed by an RBI single by Kacie Gaskin. Loryn Johnson then sent the first pitch she saw over the left field wall for a 4-0 lead.
Just before the bottom of the third was to begin, a rain delay halted play for 40 minutes.
In the top of the fifth, Williams led off with a double followed by a Gaskin walk. Johnson then took a 1-2 pitch off the scoreboard to give UT a 7-0 advantage and put the game out of reach.
The Shockers struck in the sixth when Britnee Barnett doubled to right-center. Cynthia Verhulst singled to center and Jessica Spencer walked to load the bases. Jamie Stanclift hit to thirdbaseman Johnson, who stepped on the bag at third and threw wildly to first. Barnett and Spencer scored on the play to make the score 9-2.
Bright took the loss for WSU going five innings and striking out 12.
WSU will play Utah (9-3) Sat., Mar. 1 at 11 a.m.
