WICHITA, Kan. - After two days of flexing its offensive power, Wichita State's (11-17) bats were hushed on Sunday morning, as Nebraska (15-7) took home the 2007 Shocker Invitational title with a 5-0 record, thanks to a 4-1 win over the Shockers at Wilkins Stadium.
Nebraska got on the board in the top of the first with a two-run home run by Husker first-baseman Crystal Carwile, that brought home Darcy Rutherford who reached in the leadoff spot after being hit by Margo Pruis (5-7).
The Shockers responded with a leadoff home run by Katie McGeeney, her first of the season, cutting the Husker lead to 2-1 after the first inning of action.
Husker shortstop Devin Porter helped put the game away in the six, as she drove in Crystal Gonzalez with a rope to center, giving NU a 3-1 lead. Carwile notched her second hit of the day by lacing another single to center, allowing Gonzalez to score from second after she advanced there on the throw to home on her single in the previous at bat.
Gonzalez' RBI single chased Pruis from the game, as she turned over duties to Ashly Bright for the remainder of the contest. Pruis finished the game having worked 5.2 innings, giving up four earned runs on four hits, but walked none while striking out four.
NU's Ashley DeBuhr picked up the win to move to 8-3 on the season, working the complete-game two hitter, walking one and striking out 13 Shocker hitters. McGeeney was the only Shocker on base on the afternoon.
WSU is next in action 5 p.m., Wednesday when the Shockers host Oklahoma State. The Shocker players and coaches will be signing autographs after the game.
