Box Score The No. 8 Wichita State men's basketball team moved to 8-0 on the season with a 102-46 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore (1-6), Sunday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena.
Junior P.J. Couisnard led six Shockers in double-figures and tied a career-high with 21 points in just 22 minutes. Couisnard was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field, including 1-for-1 from behind the arc. Karon Bradley scored 14 points, Kyle Wilson had 12 points and Phil Thomasson finished with 11 points. Sean Ogirri and Wendell Preadom also connected for 10 points.
Antonio McMillion scored 16 points to lead the Hawks. Jesse Brooks was the only other player in double-figures for UMES, finishing with 12 points.
McMillion put the Hawks up early with a jumper in the lane for a quick 2-0 lead. It would be the team's only lead of the game as Couisnard put WSU on the board with a three-point play. That play started a 16-2 run over the next three minutes to put the Shockers up 16-4 with 15:24 to play in the half.
A high-powered WSU offense and tough defense never let the Hawks in the game. A Wilson three-point play with 7:59 left gave the Shockers a 38-17 lead, their first 20-point lead of the game. WSU closed out the half on a 9-0 run and took a 50-22 lead into halftime.
The Shockers shot a sizzling 62 percent from the field on 20-of-32 shooting while holding the Hawks to 30 percent on 6-of-20 shooting. WSU caused 11 turnovers and dished out 12 assists in the half.
WSU picked up right where it left off, going on a 19-3 run to start the second half. Matt Braeuer scored all five of his points on the first two possessions of the half, hitting two free-throws and a three-pointer. Couisnard brought the crowd to its feet with a steal and fast-break dunk during the run.
Preadom brought a sold-out crowd to its feet with a fast-break dunk with 3:02 to play. Freshman Chris Brown made one-of-two free-throws to give WSU a 100-43 lead with 2:17 to play, marking the first time since 2001 that the Shockers reached the century mark.
A David King offensive rebound and layup with under a minute to play put the finishing touches on the 102-46 victory.
“We shared the ball and executed at a high level,” Turgeon said. “It was a good win for us.”
The Shockers finished the game shooting 65 percent from the field while limiting WSU to 28 percent. Thomasson and Braeuer led the team with five assists each, as the Shockers amassed 21 assists. The 56-point margin of victory is the third largest in school history.
“It's unselfish basketball,” said Thomasson. “We've bought into that and it's a fun way to play the game.”
The lead allowed head coach Mark Turgeon to use more of his bench. Couisnard and Wilson were the only WSU starters that played more than 20 minutes, while three players came off the bench and played more than 20 minutes.
Sophomore Ryan Bradley scored a career-high eight points on 3-of-3 shooting, as WSU had three players tie or set new career-highs.
The Shockers will be back in action Tues., Dec. 19 as they play host to Kennesaw St. Tip-off of the second game of the Las Vegas Holiday Classic is at 7:05 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena. The game is sold-out but can be heard on KFH 1330 AM.
