WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State men's basketball added another outside shooter to the mix with the signing of Brian Amuneke to a financial aid agreement.
Amuneke (pronounced Am-You-NEEK) has three years of eligibility remaining after completing his freshman campaign at Fresno State.
"I spoke with numerous people who raved about Brian's work ethic and potential," said Wichita State head men's basketball coach
Paul Mills. "He had an impressive freshman season shooting the basketball from behind the arc allowing him to make 41 percent of his three-point attempts. However, what I witnessed when visiting with him and what his coaches confirmed was how hungry of a player he is to get the most out of his physical gifts. He has good size and terrific athleticism that allows him to create opportunities for our team defensively and offensively."
A native of Los Angeles, Calif., Amuneke played in 29 games as a true freshman for the Bulldogs, including six starts. He averaged 7.7 points, 2.6 rebounds and nearly one steal in 21.2 minutes per game. He shot 40.7 percent from beyond the arc, but saw that percentage increase to 42.3 percent (30-for-71) in conference play. All 10 of his double figure scoring games came against conference foes. He scored a season-high 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting vs. San Jose State on Feb. 4. He closed the season making multiple three-pointers in 11 of the final 14 games. Amuneke was a season-best 4-of-5 from long range at Nevada on Feb. 10.Â
Amuneke played his final three seasons of prep basketball at Rancho Christian School and was the 2024 Ivy League Player of the Year. He was a key piece to helping the Eagles to back-to-back Ivy League Championships. Coming out of high school he was rated a 3-star prospect and the 29th-ranked player in California according to 247Sports. He reclassified to the 2024 class, and was expected to redshirt the 2024-25 season, but due to injuries, the Fresno State coaching staff and Amuneke decided to remove the redshirt. He was the 14th-youngest player on a Division I roster last season.
