Shockers on the Home Stretch of Regular Season

WICHITA – The Wichita State track and field team is set to compete Thursday, April 28 through Saturday, April 30 at the Drake Relays and the Rock Chalk Classic.

The Shockers are sending a distance squad to the Des Moines, Iowa to race in the 1500 meters, 3,000-meter steeplechase, 5,000 meters and 4x1600-meter relay on Thursday and Friday at the Drake Relays.

"The whole distance culture is all about racing fast and trying to position yourself well," head coach Steve Rainbolt said. "In some cases, we're trying to get athletes up into the fast heats of the conference distance races, but we also want those athletes going and running races that are going to give them confidence when they line up in a tough conference championship race."

The majority of the team will head to Lawrence, Kansas for the Rock Chalk Classic on Saturday.

"The last couple times we've gone to this meet, it has been a really good track meet, and our athletes have performed well," Rainbolt said. "We are now approaching championship time, and we had a lot of good performances down at OU last weekend. I'll bet we have more good performances."

This weekend of meets will be the final competition before the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships on May 13-15 for a large number of the Shocker athletes.

"Obviously, at this time of year, it's all about rounding into form in preparation for conference championships, so that's our objective," Rainbolt said. "We're also being really careful with athletes that have aches and pains. Every single detail is focused on preparation for the American Athletic Conference Championship."

In the latest USTFCCCA rankings, the Shocker men edged out Houston for the No. 1 spot in the conference, and the men's high jump squad (No. 9) and women's heptathlon (No. 8) and triple jump (No. 13) squads all ranked in the top 15 in the nation.
