MONTGOMERY, Texas – The Wichita State men's golf team shot 1-under-par in Tuesday's final round to secure a fifth-place finish at the Huntsville Chevrolet Bearkat Invitational.
 
Four of the five Shockers saved their best rounds for last on the par-72 Walden at Lake Conroe, led by Zac Owens (-2) and Dawson Lewis (-1).
 
36-hole leader Marcus Wochner (70-70-79—219, +3) slumped from first-place into a tie for 15^th, despite a mostly-solid Tuesday performance. He was par-or-better on 15 of his 18 holes but lost the lead with a quadruple-bogey on the fifth tee (a 379-yard par-4) and added double-bogeys on the eighth and 11^th holes.
 
It was, nonetheless, Wochner's fourth top-15 showing in five spring tournaments.
 
Owens (74-76-70—220, +4) fired a 2-under, 70 in his final round and gained 11 spots on the leaderboard for an 18^th-place tie.
 
Brock Polhill (74-75-73-222, +6) tied for 23^rd, Frank Thomas (74-78-73—225, +9) tied for 34^th and Lewis (79-80-71—230, +14) grabbed a share of 48^th out of 83 entries.
 
UT Arlington (-13) pulled away from tournament host Sam Houston State (-6) to finish first out of 15 teams. 
 
Those were the only two schools to outperform WSU (292-299-287—878) in Tuesday's final round scoring.
 
UTA's Kyle Cox (-6) took individual medalist honors by two strokes over the trio of Caleb Hicks (UTA), Mac Muraphy (LA Tech) and Jack Randle (SHSU).
 
The Shockers' next action comes Apr. 22-24 at the American Athletic Conference Championship in Palm Harbor, Fla.
