WICHITA—After 11 months away from competitive track and field, the Wichita State track and field program took part in a meet and earned nine individual event wins in the process Thursday at the Heskett Center.
Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Steve Rainbolt said the biggest win of the day was the return to competition.
"It was really great to see the athletes back competing," Rainbolt said. "All around, I really was pleased to see a bunch of good efforts.
Antonio Norman and
Joseph Holthusen had great hurdles races.
Amanda Kakoulias had a good effort in the shot put. There were a lot of nice performances, but having a track meet was the highlight for me."
The return to action comes after a 320-day break from competition after the 2020 outdoor season was canceled and the 2020 cross country season was postponed to the spring of 2021. Both decisions came as a product of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Norman's and Holthusen's season kicked off with a strong start in the 60-meter hurdles.
Norman won the event's final, running a time of 7.99. He went sub-8 twice, running a time of 7.98 in the prelims. Holthusen also posted a sub-8 time, running a 7.99 in the prelims and was the runner-up in the final with a time of 8.20.
Michael Bryan and
Jeff Ast picked up individual victories in the throwing events. Bryan won the weight throw and Ast won the shot put.
Ethan Toy won the men's long jump and
Davis Dubbert won the men's high jump to cap off a five-event victory day for the Shocker men.
On the women's side,
Amanda Kakoulias showed a strong performance in the shot put. She won the event with mark of 14.59m/47-10.50, which is just 20 centimeters shy of her personal best.
Sadie Boos made her debut in a Shocker uniform and won the women's weight throw with a mark of 15.52m/50-11. She redshirted during the 2020 indoor campaign.
Chidera Okoro, a true freshman, made her presence felt all over the Heskett Center today. She won the long jump and earned fourth-place finishes in the triple jump and the 60 meters.
Shania VanNoster won the women's high jump, clearing 1.59m/ 5-2.50 to cap off the Shockers' day.
Wichita State sends a group to Manhattan on Saturday to compete in the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular.
Rainbolt said it is a special meet because it brings the three Division I schools in Kansas together.
"I've enjoyed the last six years of being a part of this," Rainbolt said. "I consider it a special team event. It creates a sense of rivalry. I think it's a special meet and I'm glad the three schools have been able to put it together, and we're excited about it."
