WICHITA – Wichita State's Elkana Kipruto claimed his first American Conference track and field weekly award, earning the honor of Men's Track Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.

The sophomore from Kabsabet, Kenya made a statement in his outdoor season opener, clocking the No. 1 5,000-meter time in the nation to win the Raleigh Relays. After winning the American Conference indoor 5,000-meter title at the end of February, Kipruto leads the conference and the nation with his program record time of 13:35.77.

The Shockers return to the track Thursday and Friday at the Friends Spring Open and Midwest Classic.
