Shockers Dominate K.T. Woodman Classic

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State track and field program dominated the K.T. Woodman Classic, Saturday afternoon at Cessna Stadium.
 
Despite battling cold and windy conditions, the Shockers ended day four of the K.T. Woodman Classic winning 14 of 30 events held on the final day of competition. Wichita State won seven men's events and seven women's events, including the women's 4x100m and 4x400m relays and the men's 4x400m relay. Wichita State found most of its success on the track winning 10 events.
 
The Shocker women started things off hot on the track winning the 4x100m, Paula Garcia, Jacque Darby, Raianna Maples and Taniyah McMillian combined to clock a time of 46.58.
 
Success continued for the Shockers on the track as Wichita State swept the 400m dash. Daysha Bullocks won the women's race with a time of 57.45, while Rayvon Allen made his Shocker debut in the event winning with a time of 49.89. Fellow Shockers Jace Coppoc and Adam Gauzy placed top-3 in the event, Coppoc finished second (50.33) and Gauzy in third (50.47).
 
Wichita State next found itself sweeping the 100m/110m hurdles. Claudia Rojo won the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 14.30, the multi-event athlete not only set a personal best but also recorded a 2019 Shocker season leading time in the event. On the men's side Joseph Holthusen won the men's 110m hurdles clocking in at 14.52.
 
A day after winning the women's 1500m in the distance carnival Friday night, Yazmine Wright added to her K.T. Woodman Classic resume winning the 800m race with a time of 2:13.58.
 

 
The Shockers swept another event on the track, this time being the 400m hurdles. Claudia Rojo won the women's race in 1:02.44, a Shockers season leading time, while Austin Corley won the men's race in 51.97. Shocker Anycia Cole placed second in the women's race with a time of 1:04.28.
 
The 200m dash was completely dominated by Wichita State as the Shocker women would finish 1-5. True Freshman Tianna Holmes won the race with a season leading time of 24.20, Taniyah McMillian followed in second (24.41), Paula Garcia in third (24.43), Jacque Darby in fourth (24.49) and Sidney Sapp in fifth (25.18).
 
Rayvon Allen placed second in the men's 200m dash clocking in at 21.81.
 
Wichita State swept the last event on the track, the 4x400m relays. The women's team of Bullocks, Holmes, McMillian and Trudy Martin won in 3:52.49, while the men's squad of Jace Coppoc, Adam Gauzy, Allen and Corley won in 3:29.76.
 
 Not to be outdone, the Wichita State field events came away with four individual event titles.
 
The men's discus squad separated itself from the rest of the competition finishing 1-2-3. Cory Martens, a graduate transfer from Chadron State, won the event with a throw of 51.41m/168-8, followed by Isaiah Evans in second (46.31m/151-11) and Jeff Ast in third with a personal best throw of 45.22m/148-4.
 
Hayden Bugner  and Mason Buckmaster contributed to Shocker event title list. Bugner won the pole vault with a clearance of 4.96m/16-3.25, while Buckmaster won the high jump equaling his personal best height of 2.09m/6-10.25.
 
Amiya Anoma was the lone Shocker on the women's team to win an individual title, the true freshman won the triple jump with a leap of 12.23m/40-1.5. Teammate Skaila White finished third with a mark of 11.55m/37-10.75.
 
Notable performances in the field include, two second places by Kelsey Slawson in the shot put (15.16m/49-9) and discus (47.85m/157-0). Amanda Kakoulias recorded two top-5 finishes, third in the shot put (13.44m/44-1.25) and fifth in the discus (41.37m/135-8). Alex Adams placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 41.47m/136-0.
 
The women's pole vault crew gave a strong performance recording three in the top-5, Emily Gardiner led the group finishing third clearing 3.67m/12-0.5.
 
Sydney Wilson led the women's high jump trio finishing second with a clearance of 1.63m/5-4.25, Shania VanNoster followed in fifth clearing 1.58m/5-2.25.

Wichita State will travel to Lawrence to compete in the 92nd Annual Kansas Relays beginning Wednesday, April 17-20.
