Men Win Prelude, Women Sweep Multiple Events

WICHITA, Kan.
- Wichita State's men's track and field team won five events, including multiple top three finishes, to win the Shocker Prelude with 139 points. The women's program had a strong showing in the shot put, pole vault and 600m to finish fourth with 82 points.

Despite having multiple athletes compete unattached, the Wichita State women's track and field program had a strong showing with ten top five finishes in four different events. Junior Kelsey Slawson led the shot put group with a mark of 14.78m/48-6 who took first, second and third. Senior Tyra Bickham placed second with a mark of 13.90m/45-7.25 and redshirt freshman Amanda Kakoulias rounded out the top three with a toss of 12.82m/42-0.75.

Shot put wasn't the only field event the Shocker women had a strong showing in, junior Alesa Frey led a young pole vault group by winning the event with a height of 3.86m/12-8, freshmen Alyssa Wheeler and Jewel Eck each cleared 3.41m/11-2.25 to finish fourth and fifth. The high jump duo of Katie Murray and Shania VanNoster each finished in the top three, Murray placed second with a height of 1.65m/5-5 and VanNoster 1.60m/5-3 to finish third.

Natalie Halfman led the Shockers on the track winning the 600m in a personal best time of 1:35.78.

On the men's side, led by Austin Corley running a collegiate personal best 22.50, the Shockers swept first through fourth in the 200m dash. Richard Sandefur placed second with a time of 22.95, Jace Coppoc in third (23.01) and Erick Ngaiza in fourth (23.06). Louis Rivers IV won the 60m hurdles, followed by Kaden Griffin in second place with a time of 8.46. Clifford Robinson ran a 6.96 in the prelim which qualified him for the finals where he ran a 6.89, a time that equals tenth fastest in Shocker history.

The Shocks also had a strong showing in field events, including first place finishes in the long jump and high jump, redshirt freshman Davis Bahner had a personal best 6.94m/22-9.25 to win the long jump and true freshman Miles Griffith had a collegiate personal best in the high jump clearing 2.07m/6-9.5 to win the event.

"I was really pleased with how Miles Griffith jumped today," said head track and field director Steve Rainbolt, "For a season opener, close to his personal record I thought was terrific. He's a good high jumper and I am confident that he is going to have a terrific career as a Shocker, I am really looking forward to what's to come from Miles."

Junior college transfers Isaiah Evans and Tyler Patterson took second and third in the weight throw, Evans had a mark of 16.97m/55-8.25 and Patterson had a personal best 14.57m/47-9.75. The pole vault team had two top five finishes, Eric Etie cleared 4.55m/14-11 to placed third and Ben Johnson finished fourth with a mark of 4.40m/14-5.25.

The Shockers are next in action Saturday, Jan. 13 in Manhattan, Kan, at the Wichita State-Kansas State-Kansas Triangular. Field events begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by running events at 1:00 p.m.
