WICHITA, Kan. -- The Wichita State's men's and women's track and field teams won the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship over three days at Cessna Stadium.
The Shocker women set the meet record for points with 226, while the men had 181.5 points for the titles. Wichita State has now won nine MVC men's titles and 10 MVC women's titles since 1966. WSU's men won in 1966, 1972, 1994, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2010, 2016 and 2017. The women won in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.
Nikki Larch-Miller won the Women's Outstanding Athletes of the Meet, as she scored 28 points in six events.
Breanne Borman and
Rebekah Topham tied for the second-most with 26 points. Borman was also named the co-Women's Field Athlete of the Year. On the men's side,
Hunter Veith had the second-most points with 27.5 in five events, including a first place finish in the long jump.
In addition,
Steve Rainbolt was named the 2017 Men's and Women's Coach of the Year.
WSU won five men's titles and five women's individual titles overall.
For the men on Sunday,
Austin Corley won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 50.59, the 15th-best in the NCAA this season.
On Sunday for the women,
Courtney Mills won the triple jump with a distance of 41-08/12.70m, while
Rebekah Topham won the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:28.82.
Borman won the Heptathlon with a personal best 5,640 points, and
Ben Johnson won the Decathlon with 7,053 points in the two-day events on Saturday. The pair helped the Shockers to the two-day team point leads on both sides, including a 124-55 point lead for the women over current second-place Illinois State. For the men, WSU scored 100 points during the first two days to SIU's 66 points.
Borman was in second after Friday's four events with 3,362 points behind Nikki Larch Miller's 3,412, and on Saturday long jumped 18-11.75/5.78m, threw the javelin 139-11/42.66m and ran a personal best 2:23.44 in the 800 meters to win.
WSU's
Gavyn Yetter finished second with a personal-best 5,553 points, and Larch-Miller was third with 5,370. Shocker
Martiesha Caines was fourth with 5,295 points, also a career-best.
Johnson finished the 10-event competition with a 4:46.64 in the 1,500 meters, after starting the day with a 14:44 in the 110 hurdles. He also threw the discus 129-2/39.38m, pole vaulted 13-10/4.22m and threw the javelin 131-0/39.33m. After the first day of the Decathlon on Friday, Johnson was in second after the first five events with 3,724 points, 122 points behind leader Jordan Wilkerson from Illinois State (3,846).
On Friday, WSU's women also claimed titles by
Alesa Frey in the pole vault and
Carlea Holt-Miles in the javelin. Frey set a personal best with a height of 13-3.75/4.06m that moved her into No. 5 all-time at WSU. Miles won the javelin for the second-straight year with a throw of 157-4/47.96m.
Aaron True won the javelin to become the first men's champion with a career-best throw of 229-03/69.88m which is also the seventh-best in Shocker history. Shockers
John Hoplin (210-11/64.29m),
Hunter Veith (182-02/55.53m) and
Kaden Griffin (179-11/54.85m) backed True at second, third and fourth, respectively.
Also for the Shocker women's team,
Jamesia Milton improved her WSU record in the hammer throw with a toss of 205-8/62.69m to finish second on the day and break her old record of 202-4/61.68m set earlier this year at the Texas Tech Red Raider.
