Women's Golf Earns Three Scholar-Athletes

WICHITA, Kan. - The Missouri Valley Conference announced today that three Wichita State women's golfers have been named to the Scholar-Athlete First Team. Senior Bryce Schroeder, sophomore Taryn Torgerson, and senior Meghan Jack all earned First Team honors. All three student-athletes also were named to the All-Conference team at the conclusion of the MVC Championship.

Bryce Schroeder has a 3.82 grade-point average as a Health Science major. The senior from Pueblo, Colorado holds the program record for 54-hole score, scoring a 211 at the Johnie Imes Invitational this season. She also is tied for the best single-round score, scoring a 67 at the same Invitational. This is the second time Schroeder has been named to the Scholar-Athlete team in her career.

Taryn Torgerson, who medaled at the MVC Championship, maintains a 3.88 GPA as a Sport Management major. A native of Buhler, Kansas, Torgerson led the team in stroke average this year, and was the third golfer in team history to win the Championship. Her 214 at the Championship was good for the second-best 54-hole score in program history (behind Schroeder).

Meghan Jack, a Criminal Justice major with a 3.77 GPA, also was selected to the Scholar-Athlete team for the second time in her career. The senior from Bloomington, Illinois also has her name in multiple top-ten program record lists. Jack won the 2014 Elite 18 award, which goes to the golfer with the top GPA that finishes in the top 18 at the Championship. Jack also has been a two-time All-Conference selection during her career.

The criteria for the MVC scholar-athlete team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for academic Capital One Academic All-America® program. Nominees must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale), while the student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institutions and must have participated in at least 50 percent of her team's rounds or played at the MVC Championship.

Wichita State won the MVC championship, April 17-19, in Chicago, Ill.. The Shockers will head to Baton Rouge, La., to compete in the NCAA Regionals for the third time in school history, May 5-7.
