Denise Brungardt-Steenstra (Track & Field, 1990-93)

Denise Brungardt-Steenstra, one of the premiere track and field athletes at Wichita State, was an NCAA Outdoor All-American in the heptathlon in 1993 when she placed sixth at the NCAA Championship in New Orleans, La...She also established the WSU indoor record in the pentathlon in 1993 with 3,826 points, and originally set the 1992 Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference record in the pentathlon with 3,689 points... In 1993 she was named the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Field "Athlete of the Year"...She won the heptathlon at the Kansas Relays in 1992 and finished 15th at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the heptathlon in 1996...At the time of her induction, she owned the top two Shocker marks in the heptathlon (5,548 pts./5,490 pts.) and the fastest 100-meter hurdles and 55-meter hurdles times in school history...She also earned numerous all-Valley titles and honors during her career...Originally from Hays, Kan.
