Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State scored a season-high 94 points
to take down Detroit 94-79 on Saturday at Charles Koch Arena as part of Ramada
Worldwide BracketBusters.
Senior Malcolm Armstead led the way for the Shockers with 20
points on 7-for-14 shooting and six assists. Carl Hall and Cleanthony Early
each had 18 points and seven rebounds. Demetric Williams added 14 points to the
winning effort.
Ray McCallum scored 29 points for the Titans, shooting
3-for-7 from behind the arc. Nick Minnerath had 25 points and Doug Anderson
added 11.
Detroit jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but Armstead and
Early got Wichita State in the game with back-to-back layups that cut the lead
to 7-6 at the 15:32 mark in the first half.
The Shockers took their first lead of the game with 12:40
remaining in the half on a layup by Armstead to go up 10-9. A minute later, off a turnover by Detroit and
a steal by Hall for Wichita State, Fred VanVleet hit a runner in the lane to
push the Shocker lead to 17-14.
Hall capped a 6-0 run by the Shockers with a layup off an
assist from Armstead to force a Detroit timeout and put Wichita State up 25-16
with 8:34 left in the half.
A fast-break layup by Williams pushed the lead to 29-17, and
later in the half, a 3-pointer by VanVleet at the 3:28 mark put the Shockers up
40-29.
A McCallum 2-point jumper for the Titans at the end of half
brought the score 46-35 in favor of the Shockers. Early led the Shockers in
scoring in the first half with 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting. Armstead added 10
points and four assists. As a team, the Shockers shot 19-for-34 (.559).
Detroit went on a 6-0 run at beginning of half to cut the
Shocker lead to 50-45. Armstead then hit a step-back 3-pointer to end the run
and put the score at 53-45 with 16:37 remaining in the game. A minute later,
McCallum got it back to a five-point lead, 55-50, on back-to-back drives to the
basket.
Nick Wiggins ended a 7-0 run for Detroit with a 3-point
basket from the corner. Then, off a steal by Armstead, VanVleet threw the ball
to Early for a dunk that put Wichita State up 68-62 at the 12:02 mark.
Three minutes later, Armstead connected on an old-fashioned
3-point play that put his team up, 77-68.
Tekele Cotton hit a 3-pointer that capped an 8-2 run for the
Shockers that put the lead at 85-72 with 5:05 remaining. Wichita State then
went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line over the last three minutes to ice the
game.
Wichita State shot 33-for-60 (.550) for the game and 22-for-28
(.790) from the free-throw line. They also outscored the Titan bench 32-0.
The Shockers will play their final home game of the season
on Wednesday, February 27 at Charles Koch Arena. Tip is set for 7 p.m. and can
be seen on Kansas 22.
