Huhnerkoch Finishes 6th at Rio Verde Invitational

RIO VERDE, Ariz.- Gretchen Huhnerkoch finished the Rio Verde Invitational in a tie for sixth place in the Shocker women's first golf tournament of the spring season. Wichita Sate finished thirteenth as a team.

Huhnerkoch was 11-over for the tournament, shooting a 224 over the three-day competition.  In the second round, Huhnerkoch shot an even par 71, which is her lowest round of the 2011-12 season, and second lowest of her career. She shot a 72 three times during the fall season.

Hannah Martin (T39) and Natalie Samb (T44) both finished in the top 50 for the Shockers. Martin shot a 237 for the tournament, while Samb was right behind her at 238.

As a team, the Shocks shot 32-over for the tournament, with a score of 950. They shot a 317 in each of the first two rounds and a 316 in the final round on Sunday.

"The girls, fundamentally, are doing well," said Head Coach Tom McCurdy. "This was not the way we wanted to start the season, but I saw some things we can build on."

Kansas took the tournament, shooting a 900 over three rounds. You can view all of the final results here.

The Shockers are back in action next weekend when they travel to Monterey, Calif. to participate in the Del Monte Invitational.
