Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - Carl
Hall and Demetric Williams each had 11 points to lead Wichita State to their
second victory of the Triple Crown Cancun Challenge defeating Howard, 69-50,
Saturday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.
Playing their third game in five days the usually fast
starting Shockers started the game a bit sluggish as they headed into the first
media timeout trailing 7-6, with starting center Ehimen Orukpe saddled to the
bench after picking up two quick fouls before the 18:00 mark.
Evan Wessel's 3-pointer from the right corner followed by
four consecutive points from Cleanthony Early gave Wichita State (4-0) their
first significant offensive push of the game taking a 23-14 lead with 5:26
remaining in the half. The Shockers offense found its stride from there with
Demetric Williams consecutive breakaway finishes, the first a two-handed dunk
and the second a layup around a Howard defender, to give Wichita State a 30-14
advantage with 3:00 remaining.
The Shockers closed the half on a 21-0 run over the final 7:01 capped by Nick
Wiggins 3-pointer with thirty-two seconds remaining to take a 37-14 lead.
Wichita State forced 15 Howard (0-3) turnovers in the half leading to 18
points. Wichita State showed their collective depth in the half with the bench
outscoring Howard's bench 21-0.
Mike Phillips 12 points led Howard who outscored WSU 36-32 in
the second half. Alphonso Leary added 11 while Simuel Frazier and Prince Okoroh
each chipped in 10.
Wichita State will travel to Cancun, Mexico for bracket play
of the Triple Crown Cancun Challenge Tue., Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. (CST). The game
will be televised on CBS Sports Network (DirecTV Channel 613, Dish Network
Channel 158).
