OMAHA, Neb. - Wichita State won both games of a doubleheader
at Creighton's CU Sports Complex Saturday afternoon.
The Shockers won the first Missouri Valley Conference game,
3-2, before posting a 6-5 win in the second game, which stretched to eight
innings. The Shockers improved to 12-28 overall and 5-8 in conference play. Creighton
fell to 18-20 overall and 6-5 in Valley play.
With the score tied, 2-2, in the top of the seventh inning
of the first game, Wichita State's Hayley Temple reached on a fielding error by
Creighton's shortstop and advanced to second. Heather Gerritse advanced to
third and Kiersten Dixon scored an unearned run on the play to score the
eventual game-winning run for the Shockers.
The Shockers picked up three hits in the win, including one
each from Temple, Erin Carney and Sammie Shook. Third baseman Shook also led
the Shockers with two RBI.
Wichita State pitcher Sloan Anderson picked up the win in
relief to improve to 3-6 on the season. She struck out three batters and gave up
zero hits in the 2.1 innings she pitched in the first game. Katie Armagost
pitched 4.2 innings, allowed five hits and two runs.
Creighton picked up five hits and recorded two errors in the
losing effort. Creighton pitcher Sammy Snygg (1-8) was credited with the loss.
The Shockers scored six unanswered runs in the second game
Saturday.
Carney's single through the
left side in the top of the eighth inning, scored Shook for the winning run.
Creighton took an early 5-0 lead in the game before the
Shockers scored five unanswered runs to tie the game and force extra innings. Trailing
by one run in the top of the sixth inning, Shook homered to left field to tie
the score, 5-5.
Wichita State picked up six hits and posted three errors in
the win. Creighton's five runs came on eight hits.
Anderson picked up her second win of the day on the mound, improving
to 4-6 on the season. She allowed two hits and zero runs while striking out
eight batters in the five innings she pitched in relief.
Jaime Hull picked up four RBI in the win. Carney led the
Shockers with two hits.
Pitcher Snygg (1-9) was credited with the loss for
Creighton.
The three-game series at Creighton continues at noon Sunday.
