WICHITA -- Tanya Friesen finished with a personal best 5,343 points in the heptathlon while Krzysztof Slupkowski ended his day with a personal record of 7,350 points as the Wichita State University track and field program hosted day two of the ATG Sports Shocker Pre-State/KT Woodman Classic.
Day three of the Shocker Pre-State/KT Woodman Classic begins tomorrow morning, April 15, at 9 a.m., with the long jump. Running events will begin at 10 a.m. Due to the possibility of inclement weather, the distance races and javelin competition that was scheduled for later in the day on Friday has been moved to the same time, 6 p.m., on Saturday, April 16 for the javelin and 7 p.m., for the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Friesen's point total not only sets a personal best but slots her 11th in the nation and third in Shocker history. Friesen, who already set a personal best of 5,112 points at the Angelo State Spring Break Invitational, bested that mark thanks to a big personal best long jump of 19' 2" and a PR in the javelin of 117' 11".
Denise Brungardt set the WSU record back in 1993 with 5,548 points while Mellanee Welty sits in second place, 55 points ahead of Friesen with 5,398 points.
Witney Sorell finished in third place with 4,589 points while Sarah Gilbert (4,452 pts.) and Jamie Pruter (4,422 pts.) rounded out the top-five.
Slupkowski eclipsed his previous personal best of 6,999 points, set in 2008, by running a personal best 14.74 in the 110-meter hurdles and gaining solid results in the pole vault (15' 1") and javelin (147' 9"). Slupkowski's mark puts him 11th in the nation and moves him from ninth in school history to third.
Paul Speer holds the Shocker record with 7,564 points while Jens Lukoschat has a slight edge over Slupkowski with 7,364 points.
Jordan Zerr was only 86 points away from his personal best as he finished the meet with 6,874 points to finish in second place.
