WICHITA, Kan.- Ben Smith scored 14 points in the second
half and two other Shockers reached double figures as Wichita State took down
Bradley,61-41, in front of a sold-out crowd inside Charles Koch Arena Saturday
afternoon.
Smith didn't
miss a shot in the game going 6-for-6 from the field and 4-for-4 from behind
the three-point line. Three
Shockers reached double figures as Smith tied his career high with 16 points and Gabe Blair
and J.T. Durley both pitched in 10 points apiece. Blair finished the game with his second career double-double
as he also picked up 10 rebounds.
Andrew Warren led the Braves with 16 points.
The Shockers
held the Braves to 41 points for the game. The last time WSU held a team below 40 points was against
Alabama A&M back on Dec. 13, 2010.
Wichita State outrebounded Bradley 35-31 as Blair led the Shocks on the
boards with 10 rebounds.
Wichita State
improves to 18-4 on the season and 9-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Bradley dropped to 6-16 overall and
0-11 in the MVC.
The Shockers
took an early 7-5 lead into the first media timeout. Bradley's Jordan Prosser opened the game with a lay-up, but Blair
answered right back with an offensive rebound put-back of his
own. David Kyles pushed the
Shockers ahead with a three pointer, but Warren evened the score at 5-5
with a deep three-pointer as the shot clock expired with 16:31 left in the
first half. Blair connected on his second shot of the game to give the Shockers
the 7-5 advantage going into the media break.
Will Egolf hit
back-to-back jumpers out of the timeout giving the Braves a 9-7 lead, but the
Shockers went on a 15-2 run after that.
Blair dunked his way to his sixth point of the first half and Graham
Hatch hit back-to-back three-pointers from the right wing. Joe Ragland knocked down a three from
the left wing and Smith tipped in a missed three point attempt by Kyles to give
the Shockers their first double digit lead of the first half, 22-11.
Warren ended the
Shockers' run with a layup with a little over seven minutes left in the first
half. He connected on a three-pointer the very next possession making the score
22-16 in favor of the Shockers.
The Shockers
held the Braves to only two field goals during an eight-minute span in the
first half. Blair extended the
Shockers lead to nine before Warren connected on another jumper for the
Braves. Durley gave Wichita
State a 26-18 lead going into the last media timeout of the first half.
Wichita State
picked up their second double-digit lead of the first half with a little under
two minutes to play. Ragland
picked up a steal and found Kyles down the court to give the Shocks a 28-18
lead. Blair extended that lead to
twelve by connecting on a shot inside.
WSU took a 30-18 lead into the half time break.
Blair paced the
Shockers in the first twenty minutes of play scoring 10 points and pulling down
seven rebounds. Warren led the
Braves with 10 points off of 4-of-8 shooting from the field.
The Shockers
outrebounded the Braves 21-11 in the first half. Blair and Stutz paced the Shocks on the board with seven and
six rebounds respectively. Prosser
led Bradley with four rebounds in the first half.
Durley came out
firing after the half time break scoring Wichita State's first eight points of
the second half. The Shocks and
Braves traded baskets for most of the first four minutes, as WSU took a 38-28
lead into the first media timeout.
Murry extended
the Shocker lead to fourteen with a jumper from the right elbow, WSU up
40-26. Warren hit his third
three-pointer of the game to bring the Braves within nine points, but Ben Smith
answered right back with a three-pointer of his own to put the Shocks up 43-31.
Smith continued
his hot shooting connecting on back-to-back three pointers putting the Shockers
ahead 49-33 with 8:22 left in the game. Smith kept his hot streak going and
scored his eleventh straight point in the second half with a reverse layup that
gave the Shockers a 51-33 advantage.
Smith scored
his, as well as the Shockers', 14th-straight point by knocking down his fourth
three-pointer of the second half.
The connection from long range gave Wichita State its first twenty-point
advantage of the game, Shocks up 54-34.
Senior Derek
Brown connected on the Shockers' tenth three-pointer of the game giving the
Shockers a 61-37 lead with a little over two minutes left to play in the
game. The Shocks never looked back
as they carried a twenty-point lead for the remainder of the game.
The Shockers are
back on the road to face the Sycamores of Indiana State for the second time in
four games. Tip-off is set for
6:05 p.m. and can be seen on Kansas 22.
