HUTCHINSON - Led by senior All-American Dustin Garza's second-straight conference medalist performance, the Wichita State men's golf team won the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament for the 15th time in program history at Prairie Dunes Country Club on Tuesday.

Head Coach Grier Jones captured his ninth MVC title in 12 years despite a windy first day and the vicious golf course at Prairie Dunes. The conditions kept the second-place Southern Illinois Salukis in striking distance after Monday, trailing by just a stroke. The one-two finishers, Garza and sophomore Anders Engell, led the charge in giving the Shockers the breathing room they were without on day one, as the Shocks (922) won by a comfortable 11 strokes over the Salukis (933).

After finishing the first day tied with Engell for second place, Garza (78-75-70=223) notched the only even round of the tournament. His birdie on the par-5 17th hole boosted him to a four-stroke win over his sophomore teammate Anders Engell. Engell (227) overlooked the conditions and played three consistent rounds, starting and ending his tournament with a 74 (+4) to tie him for second place, his highest finish of the season.

While Garza was working on his seventh individual title of the season, three of his underclassmen teammates were finishing in the top 20. Aside from Engell, the freshmen duo of Hunter Sparks and Tyler Gann finished tied for eighth and 20th place, respectively. Per the usual, the pair both carded a 77 (+7) for their low rounds of the tournament on Tuesday.

Rafael Becker took five strokes off of his first and second-round scores, firing a 78 (+8) on the final 18 holes to end his first conference tournament tied for 27th.

Wichita State will head back to Wichita to prepare for NCAA Regionals on May 20-22. The Shockers' regional desitination will be posted to GoShockers.com when it becomes available.
