Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State defeated the Texas Southern
Tigers, 79-67, in front of 10,387 fans at Charles Koch Arena on Tuesday night. The Shockers had a field goal
percentage of 52 percent (26-for-50) and a 3-point percentage of 42 percent
(11-for-26) for the game.
The Shockers were led by David Kyles, who had a career-high
20 points with a career-high seven field goals (7-for-9) and five treys (5-for-7). Joe Ragland added 11 points off the
bench for WSU and Toure' Murry had 10 points. Texas Southern was led by Lawrence Johnson-Danner's 22
points and Kevin Galloway added 20 points.
Wichita State jumped out to a 5-0 lead after Kyles's free
throw but Texas Southern answered with six-straight points to take the lead,
6-5. Ragland's 3-pointer gave the
Shockers the lead back, 8-5, and a JT Durley jumper extended their lead to,
10-5, at the 12:10 mark.
Kyles's second 3-pointer of the first half gave the Shockers
their first double-digit lead at, 23-13, with 6:02 to go. Murry hit a 3-pointer
from the right baseline to extend the Wichita State lead to, 34-25, with 35
seconds left in the half. Another
Murray 3-pointer at the buzzer extended the Shock lead to, 37-25.
Wichita State shot a blistering 50 percent from the field
and 43 percent from behind the 3-point line in the first half. Kyles led the Shockers with 11 points
and Murry added eight points at the break.
In the second half, a Garrett Stutz layup and another 3-pointer
from Kyles gave the Shockers a 46-28 lead with 17:28 left in the game. Joe Ragland's 3-pointer extended the
Shockers lead to, 56-35. Texas
Southern cut the Shockers lead to, 77-65, at the 1:16 mark but a dunk by Ben
Smith electrified the crowd and put the Shockers ahead, 79-65.
The Shockers will play next at the Maui Invitational Monday,
Nov. 22 against the University of Connecticut. Tip is 2:05 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
