Shockers Open Women's Tennis Season with Win

OMAHA, Neb. - With a brand new addition and an altered lineup, No. 70 Wichita State picked up a road win to open its season against Missouri Valley Conference rival Creighton, 5-2.

The Shockers (1-0, 1-0) won in all three doubles positions and took positions one thru four on the road at the Koch Family Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.

"It was good," Head Coach Colin Foster said of picking up their first MVC victory. "We've got a tough weekend of competition ahead of us so it's good that we got a chance to pull it out. The match got tight towards the end, so I'm proud of the girls for getting it done."

Playing without their #1 singles player, sophomore Lutfiana Budiharto, the Shockers stepped up. Ranked #28 nationally, Budiharto was unable to take the court for singles due to an injury. Showing her competitive drive, Budiharto paired up with senior Stephanie Dalmacio to earn the 8-3 victory in the No. 1 doubles match against Creighton's Tess Reddin and Anna Kirshenbaum.

Seniors Florentina Hanisch and Lenore Lazaroiu teamed up to knock down the Cadwallader ladies, 8-3. Sophomore Delia Damaschin was the Shockers most latest newcomer this fall until freshman Iasmine Carpen joined the team this week. The two took the court together and defeated Kelsey Schmidt and Lindsey Erickson, 8-3, to complete the Shocker doubles sweep.

Dalmacio stepped forward in the singles, taking the No. 1 spot and coming up big. After dropping the first set, she roared back against Reddin to win, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.

Damaschin played the No. 2 position and defeated Kirshenbaum in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-0. Seniors Hanish and Lazaroiu each won in straight sets, as well. Hanisch used a tie breaker in the second set to beat Lauren Mastro, 6-3, 7-6 (5). Lazaroiu took out Schmidt in the No. 4 slot, 6-4, 6-3.

The Shockers' only losses came at the No. 5 and 6 positions. Carpen fell to Creighton's Lindsey Erickson, 6-1, 6-1 while sophomore Lily Wakim lost to Mary Pat McMullan, 6-3, 6-2.

The Shockers head to Lincoln for tomorrow's match against No. 55 Nebraska (2-0). First serve is set for 5 p.m.
