FORT WORTH -- Senior
Dustin Garza chalked up another tournament title to his Shocker golf resume as he led Wichita State to a third-place finish at the UTA/Waterchase Invitational hosted by the University of Texas-Arlington.
Garza shot a 70 (-2) in the final round at the Waterchase Golf Club in Fort Worth, Texas on Tuesday, following a 68 (-4) in the first round with a 70 (-2) in round two on Monday. The 208 (-8) 54-hole tournament score landed him alone in first place.
Garza's performance helped guide the Shockers to a team score of 294 in the final round, and an 872 (+8) overall, good for third place in the 19-team field. The Shockers finished 12 strokes behind second-place host school UTA and eight strokes ahead of fourth-place Sam Houston State.
"Overall, we did some good things this week," Head Coach
Grier Jones said. "Dustin played great and the three freshmen handled themselves very well for their first event."
The first of which was
Tyler Gann. The freshman finished his Shocker debut tied for 24th after shooting a 78 (+6) on Tuesday and a 221 (72-71-78) for the tournament. Fellow freshman
Rafael Becker carded a 75 (+3) for the second consecutive round to end the tournament tied for 31st.
Senior
Connor McHenry finished play with a 76 (+4) on Tuesday and a 225 (71-78-76) overall to tie for 40th. Playing his first tournament as a Shocker, freshman
Hunter Sparks notched his best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 73 (+1) to complete play at 226 (74-79-73) and tied for 45th.
Competing as an individual, senior
Brad Boan carded an 84 (+12) on Tuesday to finish with a 242, tied for 90th.
"There are definitely some areas we need to focus on before heading to Richmond next week, but I think we're on the right track."
The Shockers travel to Richmond, Va., for the VCU Shootout on September 28-29.
