WICHITA -- A career-high 17 points from freshman guard Jessica Diamond helped the Wichita State University women's basketball team remain perfect at home on the season with a 65-60 win over South Dakota University Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Haleigh Lankster had 12 points and three rebounds while juniors Morgan Boyd and Sheena Johnson recorded 10 and 11 points, respectively.
Amber Hegge led the Coyotes with 15 points. Annie Roche notched 10 points while Jackie Hiebert had eight points and 10 boards.
Freshman Chynna Turner had eight points off the bench for WSU.
Both teams struggled from the onset on offense with WSU holding a 10-7 advantage thanks to a six-point effort from freshman guard Jessica Diamond.
The Shockers and Coyotes were each 2-of-8 from the floor in the games first nine minutes.
WSU showed their strength on the glass as the home team held an 16-5 margin on the boards with Michelle Price and Marisah Henderson pulling in a team best four rebounds as the first half wound down.
With just over five minutes remaining the Shockers increased their lead to 24-9 as a WSU steal was capped by a Diamond bucket, plus one. The Shockers went on a 12-0 run before a Mosely basket gave the Coyotes their first points since the 8:44 mark.
Diamond had 15 points in the first half on 5-of-6 shooting from the field to lead Wichita State.
Mosley and Roche each scored five points to pace the Coyotes.
The Coyotes mounted a comeback in the early part of the second half as the WSU lead dwindled from a game-high 17 points to only five as back-to-back three-pointers from Kinder and Hegge cut the SDU deficit to five (43-38, 10:52 remaining).
A pair of free-throws by Kinder dropped the WSU lead to only three before Lankster was able to respond on two free-throws of her own. Turner gave the Shockers a nine-point lead with just over six minutes remaining on a pair of baskets from the charity stripe. A 4-0 swing by the visiting team dropped the advantage back down to five (53-48) with 4:55 left to play.
South Dakota moved to two points of tying the contest on the second long ball of the day by Hegge only to have the Shockers again respond as Lankster drained a three with Boyd following on the next possession with a jumper to put WSU back up by seven.
The Coyotes did not go quietly in the waning minutes of the game as another 4-0 run was sparked by a Hiebert layup. With 53 seconds left on the clock South Dakota got a layup from Mosley to make the score 58-57.
Boyd got the dish from Henderson to answer the Coyotes score with a tough layup of her own, plus one, to put the Shockers back up by three (60-57). The WSU margin continued to see-saw between five and three points until Lankster was able to put the game away for Wichita State as she drained both free-throw attempts with only five seconds remaining.
Kinder finished with nine points for SDU.
Henderson registered one point, four rebounds, and a team best seven assists in the win.
Wichita State will host Loyola (Ill.) on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 7:05 p.m., in their next contest.
