Land Breaks School Record at Nationals

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Senior Mica Land led the Shockers with a record-breaking performance on Day One of the 2008 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of Drake University.

Land, a senior from Andover, Kan., finished second in her heat of the 3000m steeplechase with a WSU record of 10 minutes, 12.28 seconds. She broke her own record, set two weeks ago at the NCAA Midwest Regional, by two seconds. The previous record was held by former all-MVC distance runner Sarah Becker. Land's time was also the second fastest overall in the event on the day. She qualified in the third position behind each heat winner.

Also competing for the Shockers was javelin throwers Kyle Becker and Brett Trudo, along with pole vaulter Brooke Demo. Becker and Trudo missed qualifying for Friday's finals with their performances on Wednesday. Trudo was 15th in the preliminaries with a throw of 207 feet, 8 inches, while Becker, who was battling injury, was 26th with a toss of 180-7.

In the pole vault, Demo narrowly missed qualifying, placing 15th in the preliminary round with a vault of 13-1 1/2. The top 14 athletes cleared 13-5 1/4 to qualify for the finals.

Land, the only Shocker competitor left in the competition will compete on Friday at 7:25 p.m. Television coverage on CSTV is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
