WICHITA, Kan. ? The Wichita State women's tennis team celebrated “Think Pink” day with a 7-0 win over Northern Iowa Saturday afternoon at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. Anna Egorova won her 13th-straight doubles match while helping the Shockers to their fourth-straight MVC win.
The Shockers took the early 1-0 lead, taking two of three doubles matches from UNI. Stephanie Dalmacio and Laryssa Ferreira made quick work of Sampada Kanade and Diana Mendez in the No. 1 doubles match, cruising to an 8-1 win. The Panthers countered with an 8-3 win in the No. 3 match, as WSU's Florentina Hanisch and Torrie Browning dropped the Shockers' only doubles match to Carolina Hannes and Laia Gonzalez.
Anna Egorova won her 13th-straight doubles match, as she teamed with Lenore Lazaroiu to defeat Taynara Moraes and Meghanna Paritala, 8-4, to secure the doubles point for the Shockers by winning the No. 2 match.
The Shockers continued their bid for a sweep in singles play. Stephanie Dalmacio opened the singles competition with a 6-2, 6-0 win over UNI's Sampada Kanade in the No. 1 match. Anna Egorova followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win over UNI's Laia Gonzalez in the No. 3 match to give the Shockers a 3-0 advantage.
WSU claimed the match when Torrie Browning defeated UNI's Diana Mendez in the No. 5 match, 6-4, 6-2 and gave the Shockers the decisive 4-0 advantage.
With the match already decided, Laryssa Ferreira rallied for a three-set win over UNI's Carolina Hannes in the No. 6 match, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2, while Lenore Lazaroiu downed UNI's Taynara Moraes in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 4 match. Florentina Hanisch capped the Shocker sweep with a third set tie-break thriller, 5-7, 6-0, 10-6.
With the win, the Shocker improve to 13-7 on the season, and 6-1 in conference play. They conclude their season Sunday with a noon match against Drake at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
