WICHITA, Kan. ? The No. 47 Wichita State women's tennis team remained undefeated at home Sunday with a 4-3 upset of No. 38 Tulsa. Five of the six doubles matches required three sets in a match that lasted more than four hours.
The Shockers took the early advantage, claiming the doubles point by sweeping the Golden Hurricanes. Ranked No. 60 in the nation, the doubles team of Anna Egorova and Lenore Lazaroiu defeated Tulsa's Thalia Barriga and Marta Marcinkowska, 8-4, in the No. 2 match for the Shockers' first win of the day. WSU's Stephanie Dalmacio and Laryssa Ferreira held off a rally by Tulsa's Rebecca Row and Carla Zabaleta, and secured the doubles point with an 8-6 win. The No. 3 doubles tandem of Florentina Hanisch and Torrie Browning completed the doubles sweep with a 8-7 (9-7) tie-break win over Tulsa's Alexandra Kichoutkin/Jie Zeng.
Florentina Hanisch and Lenore Lazaroiu gave the Shockers a three-point advantage with wins in the No. 3 and No. 4 matches. Hanisch defeated Carla Zabaleta in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, while Lazaroiu downed Rebecca Row in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-2, and gave WSU a 3-0 advantage.
Tulsa claimed the No. 6 point when Agostina Santoro defeated Laryssa Ferreira, but a Golden Hurricane comeback was stifled when Stephanie Dalmacio put the match out of reach for Tulsa, with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over Thalia Diaz Barriga in the No. 2 match. The win gave the Shockers the decisive 4-1 lead.
With the outcome of the match already determined, Tulsa's Marta Marcinkowska defeated WSU's Torrie Browning, 6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 5 match, while Alex Kichoutkin downed WSU's Anna Egorova 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-1 in the No. 1 match for the Golden Hurricane's third and final point.
“Tulsa was a worthy opponent today,” associate women's head coach Jennifer Magley said. “Our hard weeks of practice played a big part in our victory today. I'm very proud of our girls fight, especially in doubles.”
The win was WSU's first over a ranked opponent this season.
With the win, WSU improves to 3-3 on the season, and are 3-0 at home. Next up for the Shockers is a Mar. 12 home match with Penn State. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. at WSU's Coleman Tennis Complex.
