Shocks Top Wisconsin 3-0 in Texas Classic Championship

AUSTIN, Texas- Wichita State improved to 11-7 with a 3-0 win over Wisconsin (7-12) in the championship game of the Texas Classic, Sunday at McCombs Field.

Heather Gerritse helped put WSU on the board first, leading off the top of the second with a double to the gap in left-center. Caley Roberts came in to run for Gerritse and scored when right fielder Tara Hiteman bobbled a Lindsie Mitts fly ball. Kiersten Dixon singled and both runners moved up a base on a passed ball, but UW pitcher Letty Olivarez got Katie McGeeney to fly out to end the inning.

WSU added to its lead in the top of the fourth with a two out rally, aided by two UW errors. Dixon started the rally with a single and advanced to second when centerfielder Katie Soderberg misplayed the ball. McGeeney then hit a bouncing ball up the middle that shortstop Lynn Anderson wildly to first. Dixon scored to give the Shockers a 2-0 lead.

Kara L'Huillier singled and advanced to second as the Badgers threw to third, trying to tag out McGeeney, who slid in safely ahead of the throw. Britnee Barnett hit a single to left field to score McGeeney while L'Huillier was tagged out at home to end the inning.

Shocker starter Brianna Smet worked out of jams in the second and fourth inning. In the fourth, Smet allowed back-to-back singles to start the inning, but struck out the next two batters and got Olivarez to ground out to end the threat.

Smet was relieved in the bottom of the fifth by Ashly Bright. On the day Smet went 4.1 innings, scattering four hits and striking out four while walking just two.

Bright kept the UW bats in check for the final 2.2 innings to pick up the save, while Smet earned her fourth win of the season.   

The Shockers will play their first home game of the season on Wed., Mar. 5 when they host Oklahoma State. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m., at C. Howard Wilkins Stadium.
