COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Wichita State men's tennis team notched its second win of the week Friday, defeating the United State Air Force Academy 7-0 inside the Cadet Gymnasium.
Wichita State won the doubles point by taking two of three doubles matches from the Falcons, then cruised to the 7-0 victory without dropping a set to the hosts.
In doubles play, the Shockers only loss came in the No. 1 doubles match as Tiago Espirito Santo and Jonathan Obrist dropped an 8-6 decision to USAFA's Brett Rodgers and Taylor Soster. The Shockers swept the final two doubles matches. In the No. 2 match, Albert Ballesta and Thiago Dos Santos defeated James Tomlin and Austin Francis 8-2, while Adrian Chermaci and Matt Teivans downed Johnny Buckingham and Mike Gies 8-1 in the No. 3 slot.
The Shockers dominated singles play. For the first time this season, every Shocker notched straight-set wins. Tiago Espirito Santo defeated Brett Rodgers 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the No. 1 match, while Albert Ballesta dispatched of Austin Francis in a 7-6, 6-4 decision at No. 2. Meanwhile, Thiago Dos Santos cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over James Tomlin to win the No. 3 singles point and Jonathan Obrist stole a 7-6, 6-4 decision from Taylor Soster. Adrian Chermaci and Matt Teivans added some insurance points at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively. Chermaci downed Johnny Buckingham 6-3, 6-3, while Teivans downed Greg Ferry 8-2 in a pro set.
With the win, the Shockers improve to 3-1 on the season, with all three wins coming in 7-0 decisions. Wichita State is back in action Saturday as they take on Idaho State University in a 10 a.m. (CDT) match in Colorado Springs.
