TULSA, Okla. — No. 67 Wichita State couldn't recover from dropping the doubles point in a 4-0 loss to fifth-seeded, No. 63 South Florida on Friday in the quarterfinals of the American Championship at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The Shockers (13-10) saw their season come to an end with the loss, while South Florida improved to 11-13.
In doubles,
Zaid Al Mashni and
Pablo Roche Alcaya got Wichita State off to a strong start with a 6-2 win at No. 1. The Shockers were unable to capitalize, however, falling 6-3 at both No. 2 and No. 3 to give South Florida the doubles point.
In singles, the Bulls maintained momentum by taking five of six first sets.
Ilias Worthington was the first to fall, losing 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, putting the Bulls ahead 2-0.
South Florida defeated
Luke Bracks at No. 6, 6-1, 7-5, to move within one point of the match.
Alcaya's narrow 7-6 (5), 6-4 loss at No. 3 clinched the match.
