SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- Wichita State will have its entire women's tennis team represented Thursday when play begins in the main draw at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah. Three Shockers won their qualifying matches Wednesday, joining their four teammates already in the main draw.
Laryssa Ferreira and Torrie Browning opened play for the Shockers in the first round of qualifying action. Ferreira defeated New Mexico State's Aleksa Costa in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, while Browning earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Weber State's Katie Hancock.
The Shocker duo then joined Florentina Hanisch in the second round of the qualifying draw. After receiving a first-round bye, Hanisch defeated Kansas' Erin Wilbert, 6-2, 6-3. Ferreira and Browning each followed suit with second-round wins of their own, each coming against opponents from Boise State. Ferreira downed Laura Baum in a straight-set, 6-4, 6-1 victory, while Browning knocked off 15th-seeded Rocio Frej in a 6-2, 7-5 decision.
Wichita State will have seven individuals and three doubles teams playing in the main draw of the event; the most of any team competing in the event, and the most ever by a Shocker team. Two of the seven Shockers are seeded in the 64-player individual draw. Freshman Lutfiana Budiharto is the 10th seed, and will take on Utah's Leigh Walsh in her opening match on Thursday, while 11th-seeded Stephanie Dalmacio will take on Arkansas' Emily Carbone.
Meanwhile, Browning will open main draw play against fifth-seeded Kristina Doerr (BYU), while Ferreira takes the court opposite Colorado's Camila Belalssi. Hanisch will take the court oppostie Colorado State's Laura Neal, while Lenore Lazaroiu will face New Mexico's Mackenzie White. Anna Egorova will round out the Shocker individuals with an opening-round match against New Mexico State's Natalia Salum Soto.
In Doubles play, the second-seeded tandem of Dalmacio and Ferreira will take on the winner of an opening round match against Utah State's team of Strickland/Swenson and Boise State's Mackova/Frej. Seeded seventh, the Shocker duo of Budiharto and Egorova will face the winner of New Mexico State's Boguet and Salum Soto and Colorado's Esposito/Jendrian. The WSU tandem of Lazaroiu and Hanisch will open play against Oklahoma's tandem of Eckel and Radon.
