Softball Drops Heartbreaker at Missouri State 1-0

4/4/2007 7:30:00 PM

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Wichita State (18-24, 6-6) out-hit Missouri State (16-20, 5-6) 7-4, but the Bears got the clutch hit from Katie Martin at just the right time as MSU won a 1-0, 11 inning decision over the Shockers on Wednesday to win the season series 2-1.?

The Bears threatened early, advancing runners to second and third in the bottom of the first, following a pair of singles off Shocker starter Margo Pruis (10-11). Pruis got the last two outs to end the frame without any damage, the last coming with a strikeout of MSU pitcher Melissa Porche (12-12). Porche shined in the circle for the Bears, working the complete-game shutout, walking two and striking out 12 on the day.

The Shockers weren't able to get much going offensively early either, stringing together a pair of two-out singles in the second by seniors Brooke Usher and Erin Peters. A groundout by Kara L'Huillier ended the first Shocker threat, keeping the scoreless tie through two.

WSU stranded its sixth runner of the day in the sixth inning after Britnee Barnett led the inning off with a single, but the Shockers could not bring her around, leaving the door open for the Bears.

It was a door that stayed open for both teams over the next five innings until the Bears won it in the bottom of the 11th when Pruis issued a one-out walk to leadoff hitter Jessie Smith, and it came back to haunt the senior, as a double off the wall by Katie Martin plated Smith, giving the Bears the win and the season series, 2-1. Since the seventh inning, Pruis had retired 12 consecutive batters before the costly walk.

Pruis took the tough-luck loss for the Shockers, as the senior worked the complete-game, allowing one run on five hits while walking two and striking out nine. Pruis gave up three hits to MSU's Martin, but only two other Bears managed hits.

Barnett was the only Shocker with a multiple-hit game. WSU stranded nine runners on the day.

The Shockers are next in action Friday and Saturday when Indiana State visits Wilkins Stadium. The teams are scheduled for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday followed by a single game at noon on Saturday.
