WICHITA - The Wichita State softball team continued its fall season with a doubleheader sweep of Northern Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.

WSU won game one by a 9-0 score in five innings, and took down Northern Oklahoma, 19-1 in game two, also a run-rule shortened five inning game.

The Shockers threatened in the second but stranded a pair before a Kara L'Huillier double off the left wall set up the Shockers' first run as she advanced to third on a wild pitch. L'Huillier came home a pitch later after Britnee Barnett tripled down the right line to give the Shockers a 1-0 lead. A ground ball by Cynthia Verhulst brought home Barnett, and gave WSU a 2-0 advantage after three.

Starter Ashly Bright was dominate, giving up just one hit in four efficient innings of work. The Shockers added a run on a Lady Mavs throwing error in the fourth, after Dailyn Dauman came home from first on the wide throw to second that nearly reached the outfield wall that allowed Jamie Hull to reach third safely. Hull came home a batter later on a bunt single by Kiersten Dixon, giving the Shockers a 4-0 lead. Dixon came home on a double by Katie McGeeney, after the Lady Mavs left fielder misplayed the ball allowing Dixon to score from second to extend the Shocker lead to 5-0. The errors were costly for Northern Oklahoma as WSU scored four more in the inning, capped by a two-run blast by Verhulst, putting the game out of reach at 9-0.

Freshman Brianna Smet worked the final inning to secure the run-rule victory for the Shockers after five innings of play.

Smet started game two, and kept Northern Oklahoma off the board yet again for an inning of work before turning the ball over to Cynthia Verhulst. The Shockers scored first after a Jessica Spencer single scored Katie McGeeney, who led the game off with a single. Kiersten Dixon then scored on a wild pitch to give the Shockers a 2-0 advantage after the first inning of play. Jamie Stanclift delivered to put WSU ahead 3-0 after a single to left scored freshman Jamie Hull.

A leadoff walk by Dauman sparked a rally after Katie McGeeney slapped a single through the right side, giving WSU runners on second and third with no outs. Dauman then scored on a balk by Northern Oklahoma starter Brittany White before Barnett scored McGeeney on a single through the left side to give the Shockers a 5-0 lead. A Spencer grounder back up the middle brought home Barnett to give WSU a 6-0 lead. Tranfer Caley Roberts then came up with the bases loaded and made the Lady Mavs pay, taking a White pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam, running the Shocker lead to 10-0.

Verhulst gave up a run on two hits in two innings of work before the Shockers added four more in the third to take a 14-1 lead into the fourth. WSU scored five more runs in the fourth to make the final score 19-1.

Hull came on to work the fourth and fifth for the Shockers, giving up just one hit. The Shockers conclude their fall season against Butler [Kan.] CCC next Friday with a 5 p.m., doubleheader.
