The Wichita State women's tennis team defeated California- Riverside on Sat. March 18, 8-1.
"Cal-Riverside fought very hard and made us earn each point, but our girls did what they needed to do and won the match," Director of Tennis, Chris Young said, "It is nice to win matches 6-1 and feel as though we did not play well and this was the case today. We are going to have to play much better tomorrow against Northridge, because they are a very solid team."
Madina Rakhim, No. 81 in the nation, took on No. 1 singles player Casey Cross and won, 6-1, 6-4. Rakhim has currently only lost one match this season and is ranked first in the Missouri Valley Conference. Wendi Webster then fell to Yasaman Sakhakorn in a very close match, 7-5, 6-7, 10-7. In the No. 3 singles position,
Anna Egorova took on Erynne Oki and won, 6-2, 6-2. Ana Ines Exeni also won her close match against H.R. Espiritu, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. No. 5 singles player,
Torrie Browning took on Catrisha Cabanilla where Browning won, 6-3, 6-0.
Jackie Richey wrapped up the singles play by defeating Eri Yoshimoto, 6-3, 6-3.
Rakhim and Webster teamed up as the No. 1 doubles team to defeat Cross/Oki, 8-6. Spink and Egorova also won their match against Cabanilla/Sakhakorn, 8-1. Exeni and Richey finished the match by defeating Colette Chau and Bethany Brendon, 8-6.
"Our girls are on a different level this year and each match is a lot of fun to watch, but we can't lose our focus and be satisfied with where we are at because we still can improve," Young said.
The girls will be back in action tomorrow at 11 a.m. against California- Northridge.
